Childs Play at the Seaport
by Li-Ann Lim
Antique toys, dolls, and games bring history to life in Manhattan’s South Street Seaport.
History and fun meet up at Child’s Play at the Seaport, a new collaborative exhibit developed by The Doll and Toy Museum of NYC and the South Street Seaport Museum. Child’s Play will be housed at the South Street Seaport Museum and is scheduled to open February 2005. The exhibit is family friendly and provides visitors with a hands-on experience of toy and New York City history.
Featuring toys, dolls, and games from the 19th and 20th centuries, the exhibit gives visitors a glimpse into life as it used to be. Toy ships and miniatures recreate what the Fulton Street market looked like a long time ago. Toy airplanes, airfields, toy trains, trams, and trolleys honor New York City’s long love-affair with travelers and transportation. Toys from the 1872 Crandall’s District Schoolhouse show the latest educational toys from the 19th century. Toy bridges showcase some of New York’s famous bridges, and toy fire engines salute New York’s finest. Two doll houses give visitors a look at life-styles past…and the list goes on! There is something for everyone- from history buffs to doll and miniature enthusiasts, and all who love games and toys.
This exhibit emphasizes how toys, dolls, and games mirror reality from the period in which they were produced. It is a lovely reminder about how as children (and grown-up children!) bring the big things in their world into the miniature, imaginative world of play. Time moves on, but some of the toys survive and become windows into the past. Collections like Child’s Play at the Seaport bring many of these historical jewels together and create a more comprehensive vision of the past and do so in a fun, engaging way for people of all ages.
Child’s Play at the Seaport was developed with the assistance and participation of Vic Reiling, Paul Fink, Paul Neuman, and Bob Davis. We thank them for their support and contributions in this project. More information about the exhibit, Museum hours and admissions is available at the South Street Seaport Museum web site at www.southstseaport.org.
